Bio

Eric Walter Schaffner-Photographer

Borned in St-Jérôme from Swiss parents. I first began to explore artistic creation in my early thirties, first through writing, then by singing, which I studied for three years at Pro-Voc school in Longueuil, all along taking part in three events.

2000-2005
I tame digital photography, sharpen my sense of observation and technique. I enter Marsan College in Montreal in commercial photography. This is the beginning of a time of great creativity.

Being a perfectionist and a meticulous man, camera work compels me. First and foremost a good versatile worker, I specialize in architecture portraits, still life, special events and advertising. Nature, urban landscape and night shoots are my favorite subjects outside the studio.

A comprehensive training in Photoshop C2-CS3 has allowed me to create pictures that meet my customers’ demands.

Always having in mind the infinite possibilities of digital photography, my process is geared towards constant exploration, to find new ways of breathing life to pictures, through shapes and substance.

Artistic Method (personnal projects)

The humanist themes I explore, such as suffering, pain and old age, help define my artistic premise as a process of perpetual experimentation. In that sense, I explore the different possibilities that my medium has to offer. That way, I do not confine myself to any particular niche. This takes several forms: a first aspect of my method consists of creating and shooting staged action in the studio. Another aspect is based almost solely on pure photography, and relies essentially on camera work. I also work on what is close to image processing, but is rather a pictorial approach, the result being laid on canvas. «Actually», i always use a manual digital reflex camera.

The stage settings used during the studio shoots are created in an environment under my control, in order to create narratives, they may be stories or tales, that are at times funny and at times dramatic. These stories either include characters or are drawn from plastic elements. When working on a pure photographic level, I seek unusual urban landscapes and try to capture and render their particular atmosphere. This can only be a field experience. The last aspect of my method consists of laying photos on canvas. To do so, I use digital image processing. For a example, in my latest series: Textures et couleurs chaudes (Texture and warm colors), my digital photographs have been imbedded in a textured background composed of warm colors, which have been shot earlier. This series is a formal experimentation creating a hybrid work of digital photography and painting.

Always having in mind the infinite possibilities of digital photography, my process is geared towards constant exploration to find new ways of breathing life to pictures, through shape and substance.
